DAYS 19-23 SAT. JUNE 18 - WED. JUNE 22 CARDIFF - WHITLEY BAY - NEWMARKET

We were able to navigate from Cardiff to Whitley Bay without incident. The drive, along Britain's motorways, was roughly equivalent to driving from Toronto to Ottawa. The roads were good, services plentiful, and the landscape mostly uninspiring.

When we reached the north-east, familiar territory appeared. We made it through the Tyne Tunnel to the Briar Dene, where we had a celebratory pint. Then, we navigated to Jonathan and Susanne's for a warm welcome in the light English rain.

The next three days were a whirlwind of re-connecting with both sides of my wonderful family. We toured the handsome city of Newcastle, seeing many familiar sights ans some new ones: most impressive was the Sage concert hall in Gateshead. Trivia night at the Briar Dene, walks along the sea-front, family dinners .... and then, it was over. Sad goodbyes and promises to keep in touch and to visit again soon, a last drive to the the airport with Susanne's invaluable help, and the lplane ride home. An easy flight, a talkative slow drive home: unpacking and disbelieving that, for the last three weeks, we'd been chasing dragons. Crazy !!
